Dr. Deo Ruhangaza is a pathologist and lab head at Butaro Hospital Cancer Centre. He joined
Butaro Cancer Centre in 2015 and joined UGHE in 2019 as faculty (Head of department of
pathology, Division of Basic Medical Sciences, School of Medicine). He worked in different
public hospitals in Rwanda. He has been actively involved in drafting the Rwanda National
Cancer Control Plan. He is a member of National Cancer Registry Advisory Committee at
Ministry of Health/Rwanda and a member of City Cancer Challenge (C/Can) Kigali/project, an
initiative lunched by UICC in 2017 with the aim of supporting cities around the word in creating
access to equitable quality cancer care. He is the president of Rwanda Society of Pathologists
and a member of regional pathology organizations like the East African Division of the
International Academy of Pathology (EADIAP) as well as the Association of Pathologists of East
Central and Southern Africa (APECSA). His other academic activities included dissertations
supervisor, rotation site supervisor and internal examiner for postgraduate residents in the
Pathology program at University of Rwanda/School of Medicine and Pharmacy. His research
interest is on new diagnostic markers for soft tissue sarcomas, Breast Cancer and Hematological
malignancies.
