Monica Bertagnolli, MD

President, National Academy of Medicine

Dr. Monica Bertagnolli is a surgical oncologist and President of the National Academy of Medicine. She previously served as Director of the U.S. National Institutes of Health and, before that, as Director of the National Cancer Institute. A longtime leader in cooperative-group cancer clinical trials, she chaired the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology and has been a national advocate for equitable, community-based access to clinical research. Her work has emphasized that the people who benefit from cancer therapies should look like the people who develop them — and that cooperative, federally supported infrastructure remains essential to answering the questions industry alone cannot.
