Fundamentals Pre-Workshop for Patient Advocates

2019-05-08 – 2019-05-10

The Fundamentals Pre-Workshop for Patient Advocates is a collaborative effort between Susan G. Komen and Duke University. It is open to advocates from all disease sites. This custom course is held immediately before the 16th Annual AAADV Workshop and will focus on how advocates can work more effectively with all stakeholders in the research process – industry, academia, government and technology – to ensure that the patient voice is incorporated across all conversations and decision making. This knowledge and perspective will help patient advocates benefit more fully from the complex discussions that take place at the AAADV Workshop.

The mission of the Fundamentals Pre-Workshop is to introduce cancer patient advocates to the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) drug development and approval process. The objectives are to provide basic training on the role of the FDA and cancer patient advocates in oncology product development. This broad introduction to FDA regulatory aspects of oncology product development is most relevant to attendees with limited knowledge and experience in cancer product development and patient advocacy. It is our belief that this training course is important to cancer patients and has the potential to impact their treatment. We feel that patient advocates are essential in this conversation and are proud to help bring the patient perspective to these important discussions that have taken place at this workshop. We recognize the need to stop deaths from cancer and we believe in the power of partnerships because we know that one single person or organization cannot end this disease alone.

Attendance at the Fundamentals Pre-Workshop for Patient Advocates is a requirement for attendance at the subsequent AAADV Workshop, regardless of funding source. Participants will have the option to attend the AAADV Workshop on May 2 only (in addition to the Fundamentals Pre-Workshop), or the complete AAADV program on May 2-4 (in addition to the Fundamentals Pre-Workshop).
